Lumio: Simplified Lighting
Lumio aims to make simple, beautiful and functional products. Combining a modern design aesthetic with craftsmanship and technology to continue simplifying modern life. Stylish solutions to everyday obstacles with humour and imagination.
Lumio was founded by Max Gunawan, an architect with a passion for minimal design and clean lines that make use of small spaces effectively. Gunawan’s first product, the Lumio Lamp was jumpstarted by a Kickstarter campaign. In just two weeks Gunawan had tripled his target.
Lumio was born out of Gunawan’s interest in architecture that can be transformed into multiple shapes and have multiple functions. Inspired by the rolling bridge, designed by Thomas Heatherwick in London, in which what appears to be an urban sculpture unfolds into a bridge. Hence Lumio represents the same idea but on a smaller scale.
Gunawan used to carry out foldable paper prototypes of the Lumio Lamp in his sketchbook, before it dawned him that a book-like-structure was a great way of packaging a collapsible light fixture and plus a book that illuminates would have an element of surprise.
Lumio prioritises quality and partnering with brands that have a great reputation. To make up the body of the lamp Tyvek is used for its high level of durability and it is 100% recyclable and FSC-certified wood is also used for its sustainability.
So far Lumio has been featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and GQ, as well as being featured in New York City’s Museum Of Modern Art Design Store and was named “Top 10 Most Innovative Crowd funded Companies” by Entrepreneur Magazine.
In 2015, the brand won first place for Product Design for RED DOT AWARDS and winner for the Rising Talent Award for MAISON & OBJET.

'Lumio', Maple and Walnut
A multi-functional and fun lamp, concealed behind the exterior of a hardcover book. Fully transportable, it is powered by a USB charged battery and emits 500 lumen from the light shell. ‘Lumio’ also features a leather strap for hanging and magnetic wooden pegs so that it can be mounted to any flat surface, making it a fully adaptable light source.
This lamp was described by Wired as; "… not quite a gadget and not a typical light fixture, but its unique design has captured the imaginations of design aficionados".
'Mini Lumio+’
The mini version of the ‘Lumio’. This lamp opens to 360º and emits 500 lumen from within. It features a removable magnetic spine cover that reveals a lightning charger port for mobile phones, an indispensable travel accessory.
