Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Often described as having two, almost distinctly separate personalities, Dutch designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) is frequently lauded for the duality of his approach to design. His first guise – that of a craftsman cabinet-maker who worked to re-invent chairs and other pieces — is markedly present in Rietveld's sculptural furniture pieces in which he follows a structural code all of his own. The second concerns Rietveld as an architect — one who worked with elegant

formulas and was determined to drive home the rationalist and neoplastic message in the context of European architecture. These two personas frequently overlapped and alternated as the Utrecht-born Rietveld joined and shaped De Stijl where his progressive approach became one of the movement's most distinguished interpretations of the neoplastic message in its early stages.
