After graduating from Milan Polytechnic with a degree in Architecture, a young Gianfranco Frattini (1926-2004) joined Gio Ponti's studio in 1953. It was a pivotal decision, leading to the start of a working relationship with Cesare Cassina, who would remain an important figure for Frattini for the rest of his career. A founding member of ADI, Frattini established his own design studio in Milan from where he led a host of collaborations with brands from the fields of furniture and lighting design including Bernini, Arteluce, Knoll and Artemide, for whom he designed the iconic 'Boalum' floor lamp along with Livio Castiglioni. Ghianda, a cabinet maker from Bovisio Masciago, exemplified the designer's passion and respect for the work of craftsmen, which was often evident in his consistent use of what was undoubtedly his favourite material — wood. In addition to furniture design, significant projects included interior design commissioned for spaces like the Stork Club, St Andrews restaurant and the Hilton hotel in Tokyo. A winner of both Triennale di Milano Medaglie and Gran Premio awards, Frattini is remembered as a pivotal figure in Italian design.
