Using a unique Japanese handcrafting technique, Hirota has produced a series of decorative glasses that combine tradition with contemporary design. Created using a rare centuries-old method known as 'aburidashi', the distinct opalescent pattern found on the 'Stripes' glass has been formed with bone ash and a precise process of rapidly heating and cooling the glass at the time of moulding. The result is an artistic and sophisticated pattern that throws back to the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods, when such a style was dominant.
