Wästberg

Swedish lighting specialist Magnus Wästberg founded Wästberg in 2008, after identifying a systemic failure prevailing in most of the offices and public places of the world, a problem so monumental that no one had dared confront it before.

In a manifesto entitled Lamps for Neanderthal Man (2008), Wästberg wrote about how man, in a misguided pursuit of efficiency and standardisation, had been deprived of private spheres, with light as sole protection and trust. Wästberg’s aim was to bring back light to human proximity and economise on energy and materials, particularly important in a world that has exceeded its moral authority.

Wästberg set out to turn cold and sterile environments with constant static brightness into atmospheric environments through beautiful and functional lighting that lend well-being. Wästberg lighting represents a combination of aesthetics, cutting-edge technology and resource conservation, as a result of close collaboration with some of the world’s most renowned architects, designers and lighting experts.

There is no doubt that Wästberg has revolutionised the way in which light is captured, distributed and celebrated in thousands of living and working environments like no other brand before it. Wästberg creates products that are not only unprecedented in their sleek functionality, but also they are perfectly discrete and powerful in the design-led beauty they convey.

Most recent awards include, Residence Magazine “Stora Formpris” Lighting of the year 2017, Winner the W171 Alma and in the same year for the same model it won the Form Award at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair Lighting of the year 2017.

David Chipperfield

David Chipperfield is one of the biggest and most revered names in architecture today. Chipperfield established his studio in 1985 and it has won more than 100 international awards since. Chipperfield's wide-ranging portfolio spans from unique cultural, residential and commercial projects to both functional and refined leisure and civic; while serving different purposes, each build is powered by the brand’s trademark commitment to refining beautiful design ideas so as to achieve a solution which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also architecturally, socially and intellectually coherent.

For WÄSTBERG, Chipperfield has designed No.2 Oil Lamp for the Holocene Collection and the 'Chipperfield w102' lamp.

Inga Sempé

Inga Sempé was born in Paris and was a scholarship student at the highly distinguished Villa Medici Académie de France in Rome after graduating from ENSCI-Les Ateliers, Paris, in 1993. Sempé opened her own studio in the French capital in 2000, collaborating with renowned design-led Italian companies, Cappellini and Edra, before embarking upon a list of impressive partnerships with eminent design-based businesses across the globe.

Ilse Crawford

Ilse Crawford, a creative director born in London, began life as a journalist and launched British Elle Decoration in 1989. She founded interior design company and brand consultancy StudioIlse in 2001 and has since become a household name for her game-changing work for brands such as Soho House and Aesop’s first retail store in London.

For WÄSTBERG, Studioilse have designed the Studioilse w084 serie of lamps and the No.1 Oil Lamp for the Holocene Collection.

Jasper Morrison

Jasper Morrison is an award-winning British industrial designer, best known for his functional aesthetics and quietly humorous style. With studios in London and Paris, he creates furniture and lighting for the likes of Vitra, Flos and Cappellini, and has designed everything from a folding chair for Magis to a tramway system for the German city of Hanover. He is art director of the minimalist electronics brand Punkt.

For WÄSTBERG, he created the No.3 Candleholder for the Holocene Collection.

'Île w153m1' lamp

Created by French designer Inga Sempé for WÄSTBERG, the drum kit-shaped Île w153m1 clip lamp works just as well as a freestanding piece, fixed to a wall, or attached to your shelf, desk or table. Sempé was always impressed by the clever clamp lamps of her childhood that were used in many French country houses, simple masterpieces.

To improve the clamp lamp, the aim was to allow for more uses, making it multi-purpose. A base, allowing it to stand on a surface, it can be mounted onto the wall and of course the clamp to clamp the lamp wherever you need.

‘Holocene’ Collection

No.1 designed by Ilse Crawford, No.2 by David Chipperfield and No.3 by Jasper Morrison. The Holocene Collction was developed after recognising an increased redundancy for fire in favour of electricity. In fact, man owes much to fire, from warmth to light and cooking. The element has been front and centre of human activity since the dawn of time. The 'Holocene No.3' candleholder for example, comprises a simple solid brass nub in which a single tall candle can be placed in a fitting tribute to fire and, to an extent, man.

'Chipperfield w102' lamp

The Chipperfield w102 was designed by David Chipperfield. Made from predominantly brass, it was inspired from archetypal lighting fixtures, with a simple silhouette that offers a revitalised interpretation of the familiar on a domestic scale. All visible joints are omitted to present a clean and streamlined silhouette, while directional movement with rotation at the base boasts simple modern function, alongside the option to dim the LEDs. Brushed and treated with clear matte lacquer, the surface combines subtle texture with a sleek and shiny appearance.

‘Alma’ Collection

Designed by Tham & Vidergård, the 'Alma' ceiling, wall and pendant lamp are based on a circle of soft sine waves. The result is a pattern of concentric circles created from light and shadow, which vary depending on the light source. The floating points of light produced offer an equal impact, whether the lamp is displayed independently or as part of a group. The soft and reduced shape creates a pleasant atmosphere and lends a sculptural feeling, even in daylight, when the satin matte finish and colour of the surface emerges. With its slim silhouette, w171 Alma can be mounted directly onto the ceiling or wall, or suspended freely. This makes it easy to adjust the light to the requirement of the situation.
