A brand dedicated to the uniqueness of natural stone, especially the iconic Carrara marble, Luce Di Carrara was created in 2000. Now part of Hernaux, the Italian company produces beautiful pieces, based on its strong industrial tradition and its collaborations with designers such as Lorenzo Damiani and Michela and Paolo Baldessari.
Unique Natural Stone
Luce di Carrara was founded in 2000 and is dedicated to using unique natural stone, most specifically Carrara marble. From 2013, the company became part of Henraux, a leading company in the field of excavation and the processing of marble. This merging enabled Luce di Carrara to create beautiful pieces based on strong industrial tradition, to work with marble in a flexible way while still preserving its uniqueness and establishing collaborations with designers such as Lorenzo Damiani and Michela and Paolo Baldessari.
Luce di Carrara is a company always looking forward, describing marble as “a way of seeing and interpreting the world of things”. The brand ethos is effectively “having a material, a language and a flexible design composition, but without the imposition of a style since it embodies all.”
The brand offers their collaborative designers and architects a territory, material and technology from which and with which new ideas can progress.
“CARRARA” centres on the Made in Italy philosophy. This is mainly due to the marble and the craftsmen who make Luce di Carrara items in such a way that they cannot be replicated elsewhere. Different interpretations of their products ensure the company constantly stays contemporary and offers something new. The company remains, therefore, in balance between ancient history and the modern world, thanks to one of the world’s most unique materials; marble.
Important brand ethos:
Coherence: this includes both territorial and product coherence through all stages, from design to production, and from merchandising to communications, all coordinated by a single vision. A new way of producing marble, while all the time respecting the Henraux tradition.
Style: at Luce di Carrara marble is not just a material, but a style, a way of seeing and translating what we see. Designers that collaborate with the brand, have a material, language and adaptable design composition that does not limit them to a single style.
Territory of Carrara: Carrara is a city in Tuscany where marble has been used since Ancient Roman times. The marble quarried there is exported around the world. High quality and exceptional marble, crafted in the hands of experienced artisans for truly unique pieces.
Modernity: the contemporary world is always part of the brand ethos, in order to combine unique references to the “new” with those of the “old”.
Designer Focus
Lorenzo Damiani
Lorenzo Damiani is described as a designer who makes marble flexible, is able to create objects from piles of stones and can take a metal sheet to the very limits of its possibilities. Damiani does not experiment like this for unexpected effects, but guided by the importance of sustainability and economy of form. The first of Damiani’s collection to be made from marble, ‘Monolithos’, was produced by Luce di Carrara. Damiani, graduated as an architect in Milan, is well known for his work as a furniture and product designer, with previous collaborations with well-known brands, such as Cappellini, Montina and Lavazza. With some of his collections showing, in Chigago Athenaem, Triennale di Milano and Vitra Museum.
Damiani describes how his concern for the future of marble led him to explore the reduction in thickness, which is in some cases exaggerated, while working on the LUCE DI CARRARA collection. The collection features a bath and sink obtained from a single monolithic block of marble. The block is cut with a diamond wire, this forms the part for the base, which is worked and shaped using a five axis grinder. Other cuts then form the blocks for sinks and tables. Marble is worked by "taking away", with the aim of skilfully coming up with the right cut to save the greatest possible amount of material.
Other collaborations include design studio BBMDS, for the Casina Paperweight, who specialise in creating design spaces and products with an aesthetic and functional durability, enhancing the experience of the user. Studio Archea, who designed the Marmeria collection, an architectural and design office, with interests and research activities ranging from landscape to city, buildings to design and projects varying from graphic design to publishing.
Iconic Products
‘Casina 999 Paperweight’
Luce di Carrara produced the ‘Casina 999’ series with BBMDS design studio. A limited series of 999 mini marble houses based on an exploration of the concept of home. The project was introduced at Triennale in Milan, exploring questions such as, “what happens when you no longer have a home?” Minimally-shaped, the small paperweight takes on its own unique personality, thanks to the use of marmo bianco dell'altissimo. All sale proceeds support the activities of the charity Action Aid’s project SIS.M.I.CO, which works with communities that have been affected by earthquakes in central Italy.
‘Marmeria’
‘Marmeria’ was designed by Studio Archea, an Italian architecture firm. Made out of high quality, shining white Altissimo marble, it is a sculptural piece that can be assembled in endless configurations, giving maximum flexibility.
